MPs end summer session in fiery fashion

The summer session of the House of Assembly on Friday ended with a raucous motion to adjourn about the state of the Island?s affairs.

Opposition firebrandand Shadow Public Affairs Ministerthrew the first punch, telling the PLP Government: ?We don?t need a social agenda! We need a people?s agenda. I have had enough of your social agenda.?

Government Backbencher replied that the PLP Government had inherited many of the problems Bermuda currently faced.

?That party went against the recommendations of the Educational Planning Team and moved from small schools to comprehensive education and built CedarBridge,? Mr. Perinchief said.

On the water crises, he chastised the Opposition for allowing the Tynes Bay distillation facility to shut down and now it was up to Government to ?put the plant back in action?.

He said the shortage of housing was a ?knock-on effect? of Bermuda?s over-employment, which required ?too many foreigners? and the ?overuse of scarce resources?.

?You can?t just turn the economy on and off like a tap,? he said.

Shadow Transport Minister said Government was not prepared to take responsibility for the controversial Berkeley project or BHC scandal.

?As they move forward are the actions they taken to preserve their own power or for the good of the people?? Mr. Simmons asked.

He said it was time for Government to stop making excuses and that the time for the perks of power like ?cars, trips and houses? was over.

?The people need to start reaping the benefits,? he said.

Shadow Minister of Works & Engineering spoke of a young lady who achieved an MBA online and was pictured in a newspaper with Telecommunications Minister Michael Scott ?grinning next to her?.

?But today this individual has no job,? Mrs. Gordon-Pamplin said. ?It?s time for this Government to learn they are not as wonderful as they think they are.?

Government backbencher was accused of ?putting his foot in it? by the Opposition when he said the housing crisis was the Opposition?s fault.

?You try and shoot down every housing plan we come up with,? Mr. Lister said.?The water crisis is a crisis, but they try to make a double crisis out of it.?

Mr. Lister said even if Tropical Storm Franklin struck Bermuda, ?the UBP will come up and try and knock Government?.

Regarding calls from the Opposition to name the housing schemes the Government had built, Mr. Lister said: ?You tell them exactly where it is, Mr. Speaker, and then they want facts and figures.?

Independence was something Mr. Lister said he was definitely in favour of, calling it a ?very healthy thing?.

?We don?t need anyone in the Foreign Office signing off on what we do,? he said. ?It sounds antiquated. A throwback from a previous historical era.?

Environment Ministersaid she took offence at Mrs. Gordon-Pamplin?s earlier statement about there being drug-dealers on the corner at 42nd Street.

Mrs. Butterfield said if anyone in the St. Monica?s Road area was resistant to the construction of a neighbourhood park they ?need to come in and be a part of the solution?.

Community Affairs and Sport Minister said ?the UBP spent the session talking about peace, while carrying a machete behind their back?.

Mr. Butler said there were numbers of jobs in the newspaper every day for positions most Bermudians did not have experience for.

He said jobs were bound to go to non-Bermudians ?if we are producing 200 kids a year and none of them were interested in business?.

As far as standards in public schools were concerned, the former principal said ?one or two students should never destroy the good work the majority were doing?.

?You cannot lower the standard,? he said. His generation was told to succeed in life ?in spite of? its difficulties, yet today?s generation said they could not succeed ?because of life?s difficulties.

Mr. Butler advised the House to attend the Emancipation Day celebrations at 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday in St. George?s.

?The bigger issue is to pull all the sides together, regardless of race, gender, sexuality or finances.?

Shadow Sports Ministersaid the $100,000 cheque Government presented to the Bermuda cricket team on Thursday was nothing compared to the $1 million given to veteran cricketers to play at the Cricket Classic next year.

Opposition Leader saidthe bottom line was ?Government is no closer to addressing many of the major issues the Island is facing right now?.

Dr. Gibbons said apart from a look at the Criminal Justice System, ?we are really no further ahead in the country than we were a year ago?.

It was scary that Mr. Butler spoke in terms of scoring points and Government being ahead in points. This suggested MPs were involved in a game.

He said in the Premier?s statement, there was talk of ?starting a draft design for an emergency housing unit?.

?It?s been seven years, Mr. Speaker, and there has been no clear sense of accomplishment with the very serious issue of affordable housing,? Dr. Gibbons said. ?What we are looking for is substance!?

Time is flying by and seniors are not getting help, he said. The Berkeley project was last expected to cost around $121 to $122 million, but was originally budgeted for around $72.1, he said.

?Our job is to point out when Government is not getting on with the job,? Dr. Gibbons said. ?But I am not sure we have to do that anymore.?

However, Education Minister said Government had eliminated land tax by 80 percent for seniors and 70 percent of seniors owned homes.

?Can I believe there are seniors in Bermuda who choose between medicine and food? Yes, but the numbers are small,? Mr. Lister said. ?The poor Minister of Housing gets flogged every week. There aren?t enough houses. The housing crisis will be with us for as long as we are a successful little nation.?

On the recent success of the Bermuda cricket team, he said Mr. Butler came to Cabinet saying he did not have enough money in his Ministry?s budget to fly the team to Ireland for the ICC Trophy. However, Cabinet agreed to give Mr. Butler the money.

?For the next four years we compete with the big boys, some of whom won?t have graduated high school, but when they compete in the Bermuda team, they will be a citizen,? he said.

Work at the Berkeley project would be finished by contractors in the summer he said, and be ready for the installation of school equipment in the fall.

The students will be in possession of the school in January, he said.

Tourism and Transport Ministerrose to ask the House to send condolences to the family of June Stanton who recently died.

?A veteran of 50 years, she had welcomed thousands of guests to Bermuda,? Dr. Brown said. ?Repeat visitors were brought back to Bermuda because of her charm.?

Speaker of the Houseadjourned the House until Friday, November 4 at 10 a.m.
