Campers warned to cut fruits, vegetables at home

Planning to cut up your fruits and vegetables when you go camping this year? Just be extra careful as Park Rangers will be stepping up their patrols and will be extra vigilant for knife and other blade possessions in light of a new law passed by Government last week.

The law means that those attending the Cup Match Classic are not allowed to carry any bladed instruments to the match.

Police Superintendent Roseanda Young warned yesterday that anyone planning to cut watermelon at the field should think again and cut it before leaving home.

Parks Officer Craig Burt said that Park Rangers have assigned patrol districts and will be on constant patrol checking for bladed instruments.

He said that people will ?obviously be using knives for cooking?, but added: ?If we know people are using weapons for a deadly matter we will have immediate contact with Police.?

Park Rangers will be patrolling the various campsites from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow and Friday and will be at sites as early as 10 p.m. tonight.

Mr. Burt also stressed to campers not to park in front of the gates at the various locations. He said that maintenance crews need to access the sites to clean toilets, rake the beaches and oversee the areas.

?Cars blocking the gates will be ticketed and or removed at owner?s expense,? Mr. Burt said.

People who wish to camp are allowed to camp at any of Government parks except Blue Hole Hill Park and the dunes behind Jobson?s Cove.

Campers wishing to camp at Chaplin Bay, Coney Island and Ferry Reach will be required to pay a $100 deposit and $10 each night.

Robinson Bay Park, the old the ZFB site on North Shore Road, will also be available to the public over Cup Match for camping. Originally the area was restricted due to the Ministry of Works and Engineering preparing the site for the installation of a reverse osmosis plant.

Work on the site has been postponed until after the holiday.

Reisdents are also not allowed to camp at any nature reserve such as the Botanical Gardens.
