Pioneers win was triumph for squad

Our victory over Western Mass Pioneers was a significant performance and a significant result for Bermuda Hogges.

For an under-strength Hogges team to beat Pioneers is a great achievement and really shows just how far we've come in a short space of time.

Let's not forget it took such a long time to record our first win last season.

Considering we were missing so many key members of our squad, Sunday's 3-1 victory was a huge triumph for us and crucially ends our losing streak.

I felt we probably deserved a share of the spoils against Pioneers in the opening game and the only way I could see them scoring was from a set piece or direct piece of play, rather than an intricate passing move.

That defeat made it even more important for us to take something from the second match and I could just sense the players were really up for it prior to kick-off.

They were really motivated for these two games and desperate to prove to everyone they weren't simply filling in for those guys involved with the national team.

In our customary pre-match huddle Lloyd Holder and Michael Parsons were particularly vocal and so it was apt that they both popped up with goals.

When Lloyd scores for us we always seem to be wearing our RenaissanceRe jerseys.

They're his employers and I think he's trying to give them a good plug! Lloyd's a great guy to work with and is very professional both on and off the pitch, so it was pleasing to see him score on his first start of the season.

Parsons is an experienced player and he's also had to be very patient for his opportunities.

I think he felt he had a point to prove on Sunday.

The so-called fringe players have really given us a selection headache for Saturday night's match against Charlotte Eagles and although we have our national team players available we will probably look to rest a few of them to ward off fatigue.

We will also be keeping utility man Blenn Bean and midfielder Keith Jennings with us following their impressive trials.

The Hogges staff always knew Keith could play at this level and he just needs to improve his fitness levels – he could become a real asset.

I'd like to thank all of our trialists for the professionalism they have shown over the last three games – we couldn't have asked any more from them.

I'd also like to thank BAA for allowing us to use the venue for the double header.

Obviously we were very disappointed about having our match called off on Friday night at the National Sports Centre and thankfully BAA allowed us to honour the fixtures.

I'm feeling extremely optimistic about the rest of the season and I think the Hogges will go from strength-to-strength.

We've successfully negotiated the last few weeks where we have been stretched, and now all our players have returned I firmly believe we've some exciting times ahead.

Hopefully, we can pick up another good result against Eagles.

They've beaten us convincingly every time we have played them so it's about time we gave a good account of ourselves.
