Staying cool in the long hot summer
Many nurseries and pre-schools in Bermuda do not have air conditioning. In order for children to grow and learn it is vital that they have a comfortable environment and atmosphere.
Air conditioning is not a luxury but a necessity for the comfort of students over the hot summer months, according to Adventure Land Nursery and Pre-School owner and head teacher Mrs. Rosalind Minors.
The school in Southampton have, therefore, launched a fundraising effort called the Kiss Appeal to help keep Kids Kool in Schools. The money raised will be used to buy air conditioning for the students.
They need to raise $25,000 by May 24, 1999. Parents, friends and former students are asked to support them in their efforts for the children.
Donations will be accepted. Last summer many of the children suffered from the heat even though every effort had been made to keep the children cool. The children eventually became agitated and restless because of the uncomfortably hot temperatures.
During the summer months there are activities for the children to help beat the heat. In July there is a swimming programme including indoor and outdoor water activities for the children. Fundraising events are scheduled throughout the next two months. A parent sponsored walk on April 11 at 4 p.m. is to start and finish at St.Anne's Church Hall in Southampton. A yard and bake sale on May 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. is to take place at St. Anne's Church Hall.
