Prepare for a `Fabulous' show

The all-female dance group `Fabulous' is presenting a contemporary concert at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts this weekend, and Kamal Williams is the name of the man who's putting it all together.

The event, sub-titled "teaching old songs new tricks", takes place on Friday and Saturday, and will feature dance routines to music from the 1960s through the 1990s.

"Each song will appeal to a different generation and be combined with modern movements," says Mr. Williams, who has choreographed all but one routine himself. Donneka Simmons is the other choreographer.

The young ladies, aged 11 to 17, are experienced dance students. `Fabulous' began two years ago with just five dancers, who were known as the `Fab Five'.

Self-taught, Mr. Williams began dancing at a very early age. In the 1980s he formed a duo with Calvin White called `Just Us,' and in 1989 became a dance teacher at Government's summer camp. Today has risen to the position of dance co-ordinator - experience which he says has helped him to develop Fabulous.

When school is in he teaches mathematics at Sandys Middle School, but would eventually like to have his own dance school.

This weekend's performances by Fabulous are the dance group's second year in the spotlight. The first performance last year, entitled `If You Haven't Seen Them Yet,' was a sell-out, and Mr. Williams hopes that this year's event will be just as successful.

Tickets ($25) are available at Shannon's and Zig Zag Too. The April 19 performance will begin at 8 p.m., and on April 20 there will be two performances: at 12 noon and 8 p.m.
