Hood's merry men make Onions cry

With so many teams involved in Sunday?s FA Cup first round, Commercial League action was severely limited over the weekend.

But Robin Hood took advantage of the reduced schedule to return to second place in the Commercial Division A after getting the better of MR Onions 2-1 in a tight game on Saturday.

Strong winds and a muddy pitch made it home from home for the sides consisting mainly of British and Irish expatriates who enjoyed a typically physical but fair encounter.

The score stood at 0-0 at half-time but Onions played most of the game in the Hood?s half. Onions midfielder Nick Briggs hit the post and several weak shots were easily saved by the Hood ?keeper.

Hood?s first goal came from a mistake by Craig Gardner in goal who dropped the ball at the feet of Gary Ray.

In the resulting scramble, Onions? defender Chris Fleming cleared for a corner but Ray caught Gardner on the head opening a bloody wound that required treatment.

The corner was headed to the edge of the box where Ray controlled the ball, scuffed the shot under the onrushing Onions to the feet of Derek Stapley who turned and shot through a defender?s legs and inside the still-dazed Gardner?s near post.

Onions were soon 2-0 down as a long pass from the back saw Fubler and the ?keeper colliding, with the ball running in the striker?s favour to tap into an open net.

Onions never gave up and were rewarded ten minutes from time when a cross from the left touchline by Gary Fyfe had ?keeper Randy Darrell flapping desperately as the ball looped over his head and nestled in the far corner after striking the inside of the post, rebounding against him and into the net.

During the last 20 minutes Onions piled on the pressure and with five minutes to go great work from Fyfe down the left culminated with a perfect cross into the box to Rob Perry.

Unmarked in the six-yard box and with time, Perry attempted to volley the ball but succeeded only in smashing it into the ground from where it bounced up safely into the ?keeper?s arms.

Devonshire Lions, meanwhile, also moved up to second place in the B Division after beating Wolves Pack 2-1.

Wolves player Casey Burgess stepped in to take over on the whistle after yet another referee no show.

Against the wind, Lions took the lead midway through the first half with a swerving shot from the edge of the 18 yard box by Anthony Amory.

Dwayne (Liquid) Bean added a second goal shortly before half-time after intercepting a bad pass by the Wolves right full-back.

Daniel Stovell moved forward from his sweeper?s position but could only manage to hit the Lions? post from eight yards.

Lions made five substitutions in the second half, but improved play by Wolves saw Cecil Hendrickson convert a Shannon Tuzo cross to narrow the margin.

The FA Cup draw will take place tomorrow at noon. Tuff Dogs, Key West Rangers Valley International and Vasco are the only Commercial League sides left in the competition after the opening round and will be hoping to avoid the big boys in the last 16.

The women?s competition is down to a final eight competitors while the only semi-final in the reserve knock-out competition takes place on Saturday when Dandy Town take on Devonshire Rec. at the Wellington Oval at 3 p.m. Devonshire Colts have a bye into the final.
