Laura races to new record
but left an indelible mark on the event.
Her time of five minutes, 38.5 seconds smashed by a whopping 12 seconds the secondary schoolgirls record set by Tamika Williams last year, and proved to be the only new record on the night.
The Roger B. Chaffee student, who showed her athletic prowess in cross country last season, only arrived on the Island last year. And she'll be leaving this year when her family -- her father's a doctor on the US Base -- move to Rhode Island.
Turner, who boasts an impressive 5:04.2 for the 1500 metres, stormed home in one of the best races of the evening as the first three girls across the line all broke the old record.
Saltus student Elisha Miller ran a close second in 5:40.1 while Velvet Smith of Bermuda Institute grabbed third in 5:45.6.
Predictably Michael Donawa galloped to his third successive victory in the secondary school boys division in what was his last race in that category.
And while his time of 4:39.6 was nine seconds outside the record he set two years ago, it still bettered all but the winner's time in the adult male race.
"I was hoping I could break the record as this was my last run,'' said Donawa, who hopes to win an athletic scholarship in the US. "But all in all I'm pretty pleased.'' Perhaps one of the biggest surprises of the evening was the second-place finish of Saltus student Stephen Fahy in the secondary boys event.
A member of Bermuda's swim team at last summer's Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada, Fahy showed he's equally at home on dry land with a superb time of 4:52.9. Close behind in third was Berkeley's Damon Ming in 4:53.3 and Berkeley students then filled the next four positions.
In the primary boys race, West End's Nasir Wade chopped some seven seconds off his qualifying time as he finished strongly to win in 5:29.1, just ahead of Prospect Primary's Jeremiah Smith (5:32.4) and Saltus' Tyler Butterfield (5:34.9).
Gilbert Institute pupils grabbed a one-two in the primary girls race, Akilah Mills leading from almost start to finish to win in 6:20.5 followed by Emma Rego in 6:27.7. Cheri Minors of Port Royal placed third in 6:32.1.
The Celebrity Mile -- it was actually just over half a mile -- saw AS&K's Geoff Bell (3:10.9), bedecked in lawyer's wig and robes, outsprint Alan Rance (3:11.4) with Rod Ferguson (3:15.5) third.
LAURA TURNER -- night's only record breaker.
MICHAEL DONAWA -- three wins in a row.
