Fast finishing Forgesson snatches 5K race victory

Jennifer Fisher continued her dominance on the roads with a record-breaking performance in yesterday's Butterfield and Vallis Minute Maid 5K.

Celebrating the birth of his first child just last week, Forgesson overhauled frontrunners Tracy Wright and Jamal Hart as they tackled the toughest part of the course -- Berkeley Hill -- and pulled ahead to finish in 16 minutes, 13 seconds.

Wright (16:25) followed 12 seconds later while Hart finished third in 16:35.

It wasn't Forgesson's best time over the distance, but the Commonwealth Games marathoner admitted he was more suited to the longer races.

"It's not my favourite distance, but I think my fastest mile was probably my last. I kind of sneaked upon them (Wright and Hart) when they might have been thinking about each other.'' Roger Dill (16:51) and Manuel Lopes (17:01) rounded out the top five in a bumper field of over 230 -- one the biggest seen in recent years outside the Marathon Derby and International Race Weekend.

Fisher, unbeaten and virtually unchallenged in cross-country and on the roads this season, smashed the women's course record with a blistering 17:47 which placed her 14th overall.

The Island's best bet for a medal in next Saturday's CAC cross-country championships to be hosted by Bermuda over a new course at Belmont, Fisher finished more than 30 seconds ahead of second-placed Karen Adams (18:21).

Julia Hawley, who will likely join Fisher on Bermuda's CAC team, took third place in 18:38.

Harry Patchett, another CAC squad member, took men's Masters honours with a sixth place finish in 17:11, ahead of Rod Allen (17:30) and Jay Kempe (18:43).

Sandra Mewett led home the female Masters in 19:03 with Debbie Butterfield second in 20:16 and Jane Christie third in 21:08.

Other category winners included Ki-Jah Butterfield (boys under-12) in 20:26; Gabrielle Butler (girls under-12) in 23:57; Garon Wilkinson (boys 13-17) in 18:13; Laura Turner (girls 13-17) in 20:06; and Geoff Bell (men 50-59) in 18:55.

Entry deadline for the KPMG road racing series has been extended to Friday, February 17. Forms can be obtained from Sportseller or the New Winner's Edge.

Yesterday's event was the fourth senior and first junior race in the series.

Bermuda's team for Saturday's CAC cross-country is expected to be announced by the BTFA tomorrow. National coach Gerry Swan has been overseeing a men's squad which includes Tracy Wright, Mike Watson, Harry Patchett, Jamal Hart, Roger Dill, Cal Steede, Ed Harris and Winton Woodley and a women's squad comprising Jennifer Fisher, Julia Hawley, Donna Watson, Melanie Claude, Georgia Belboda, Jeanna Jones and Shari Wade.
