Driving charges rule out Trinidad star Edwards

Carlos Edwards: Won?t play in this week?s match after being charged with a number of driving offences in England.

Ipswich Town’s Carlos Edwards will miss Trinidad’s World Cup qualifier against Bermuda at the National Sports Centre having been charged with a string of driving offences. The 32-year-old has been summoned to court in the UK next week after he was allegedly caught driving while disqualified and without insurance. After consulting with Trinidad coach Otto Pfister, Edwards who was expected to replace the injured Kenwyne Jones as skipper decided to concentrate on his legal problems rather than travel to Bermuda.Edwards said he was forced to get behind the wheel due to a family emergency with his wife in hospital expecting to give birth to twins. The former Sunderland man was given an automatic one-year ban from the roads and fined £7,000 after admitting to a slew of driving offences in June.“My wife is in the hospital at the moment and that’s the reason as she usually has been the one driving me before this,” said Edwards.“Our fingers are crossed that all will be well with her.”Bermuda will now look to take advantage of a depleted Trinidad side who are also without injured trio Chris Birchall of LA Galaxy, Darryl Roberts and Anthony Wolfe.Despite the unavailability of several of their most influential players, Trinidad assistant coach Anton Corneal insisted there was “no panic” in the Soca Warriors ranks.“We are faced with a situation where a couple of our regular starters are ruled out of playing but it’s not a panic situation for us,” Corneal said.“We believe that the current players in the squad are capable of responding well to the challenge ahead. They’ve all played at this level before and they are fully aware how important it is for us to get three points here.”Narrowly beaten by Trinidad in Port of Spain last month, Bermuda are still searching for their first Group B point having also lost to Guyana in their second qualifying match. And with anything less than a win almost certainly evaporating Bermuda’s qualifying hopes, Corneal said Trinidad had braced themselves for an attacking onslaught from Devarr Boyles’ side.“Bermuda have never been an easy team when they play us and they are at home where they are faced with a must win situation so we expect that they will come at us with everything. But once we prepare well and we play to plan, then the rest will take care of itself,” Corneal added. The Soca Warriors arrived on the Island on Sunday via an Air Jamaica plane which flew the team directly to Bermuda. They will be based at Grotto Bay Hotel, in Hamilton Parish, throughout the week.Belgium-based midfielder Khaleem Hyland and Columbus Crew defender Julius James were both expected to join up with the squad last night following matches over the weekend for their respective teams.Friday’s game kicks off at 8 pm.
