Pembroke Rest Home residents to be moved

The moving date for residents at the Pembroke Rest Home remains a mystery after a Government announcement on the topic was cancelled.

However, manager of the facility Valerie Arorash told The Royal Gazette yesterday that all the 14 residents would be moving to the newly opened The Sylvia Richardson Care Facility in St. George's.

Last year the rest home came under fire after claims were made that residents received sub-standard care and the facility was run down.

The Government was expected to make the moving date public on Monday but the press conference was cancelled after former Health Minister Nelson Bascome took a leave of absence to deal with a possible future court date.

Yesterday, Ms Arorash said: "I don't know when we are moving, I haven't been told the date."

She said residents would enjoy the new facility because it is much bigger and very modern. The facility was opened in January and boasts a library, beauty salon and chapel.

Moving out of the Parsons Road rest home would take a while she said because many residents had large personal belongings, but that family members had been kept abreast of the situation and had pledged to help out.

A Government spokeswoman was unable to provide any information on Monday on whether the rest home is still earmarked for closure, and when the public could expect an official announcement on the topic.

The home has been accused by Shadow Minister for Seniors Louise Jackson of providing sub-standard care. She said of the cancelled announcement yesterday: "This is very disconcerting for both the staff and the seniors. I just hope they resolve this very quickly."

Attorney General Philip Perinchief has taken on the role of Health Minister, but could not be reached for comment.
