BFA chief apologises for anthem blunder
Bermuda?s team and a large crowd stood proudly at the National Sports Centre prior to last night?s kick-off ? to the wrong national anthem.
With the United States? star-spangled banner blaring from the speakers, fans, officials and players alike all appeared shell-shocked.
Within minutes the guilty DJ, who on Tuesday night had also erred by playing the FIFA anthem instead of ?God Save The Queen? was told to pack his bags and leave by an embarrassed Bermuda Football Association president, Larry Mussenden.
Later, the BFA chief took full responsibility for the blunder.
?It?s FIFA protocol to play the FIFA national anthem as well as the national anthems of the countries which are playing,? he explained.
?We had a very embarrassing moment when the national anthem of another country (US) was played instead of the national anthem for Bermuda. So on behalf of the BFA I apologise to the people of Bermuda.
?I shall take further steps to ensure that this does not happen again and I also apologise to Trinidad who had to watch this indignity. At this point I am trying to find out what happened between the rehearsal at 6.15 p.m. and what actually took place when the national anthems were played.
?However, the buck stops with me and I have to take the responsibility for it, and I do and I will ensure that it doesn?t happen again.?
On a brighter note, Mussenden, like many around the ground, was pleased with the final outcome of the match.
?I am absolutely delighted with the result,? he said. ? We knew that as long as we continued to play international football at the senior level we would be able to produce and actually get a (world) ranking which indicates our true position.?
