Tributes pour in for Prospect player
The local football community yesterday expressed their deepest sympathies to the family of late Prospect United footballer Andrew Jackson who became the Island's 16th road fatality this year on Christmas Day.
The 27-year-old son of Police Commissioner George Jackson succumbed to injuries sustained in a single vehicle collision on Middle Road, Warwick, that occurred hours after a December 21 Dudley Eve Cup double header at Police Field.
"It's a sad irony that Andrew had his accident on the same day we were all watching the Dudley Eve match together at Police Field," recalled Somerset Bridge Recreation Club president Marc Bean who, ironically, is also Junior Minister for Transport.
"I had the chance to speak to Andrew at the match and everyone who knew him knew him as an outgoing person.
"On the football pitch Andrew always liked to get stuck in.
"He was a very strong player and on behalf of Somerset Bridge Recreation Club we extend our condolences to Commissioner Jackson and his family.
"We also send our condolences to the family of late Eagles goalkeeper, Tyrone Simons, who also recently passed away."
Jackson is the third Prospect player to be killed on Bermuda's roads in the past seven years behind the late Robin Hollinsid and David Roberts.
Also offerring words of comfort to the Jackson family was St.David's Cricket Club player/president Aaron Lugo.
He said: "First and foremost my condolences go out to the Jackson family on behalf of St.David's Cricket Club and the St.David's community.
"Andrew wasn't known to be one of the best footballers, but he was known to be one who always gave his all, talked a good game and showed up every Sunday ready to play.
"Andrew used to wear these hot pink Nike boots which really stood out.
"He was just an exciting character whose presence will be missed on the field. Maybe we can honour his memory before the kick-off of the Dudley Eve final at Lords on New Year's Day."
Ireland Rangers vice-president and coach Duane Deroza also sent condolences to the Jackson family.
"On behalf of Ireland Rangers we would like to send our condolences to the Prospect football team and the Jackson family," he said.
Paget Community Club president, Mike Stovell, described the late footballer as a "lively" individual.
"On behalf of my family and Paget Community Club I would like to send my condolences to the family of the late Andrew Jackson," he said.
"Andrew was a very lively and outspoken person who will be sadly missed in the football fraternity. We wish his family the best."
Former Wolves defender, Robert Thomas, added: "On behalf of the Wolves family I would like to send my sincere condolences to the Jackson family and may the Lord bless them and bring them peace during this difficult period."
A statement on behalf of the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) Executive Council, read: "Andrew will be sadly missed by the entire football family. May he rest in peace."
