Keeper Hall given chance to train with English Premier side
Fulham academy goalkeeping coach Vic Bettinelli has handed Bermuda Hogges' shot stopper Freddy Hall an open invitation to train with the English Premier League club in the future.
Hall was unable to work with Bettinelli because of a slight hand injury when the Cottagers' coach put on a training session for the Hogges' players at BFA Field over the weekend.
But Bettinelli, who was visiting the Island on vacation, still hopes to run the rule over Hall after receiving glowing reports from the Hogges' technical director Derek Broadley who has been greatly impressed with the St.George's 'keeper this season.
Hall has trials with English League Two side Charlton Athletic this summer but will be reassured to know he may have another bite at the cherry if he does not win a deal at the Addicks.
Despite being injured, Hall was the only Hogges' 'keeper to turn up to Saturday's session where he spoke with Bettinelli who has coached top glovemen such as Edwin van der Sar and Anton Niemi.
"I was disappointed I couldn't work with Freddy as I've heard some really good things about him," said Bettinelli, who formerly coached alongside Broadley at Crystal Palace.
"He looks like he's got a presence and he's a good size. Hopefully if I come back again I can work with him, or maybe if Derek wants to send him to Fulham it will be worth us looking at him."
Bettinelli's son Marcus, a Fulham reserve, was also on hand to assist in the drills and demonstrations during the Hogges' training session on Saturday.
The 18-year-old 'keeper travelled with the Fulham first team to Hamburg for the Europa Cup final against Atletico Madrid which ended in heartbreak for the Cottagers who were beaten in extra time.
"Marcus has just received a two-year professional contract which is nice for him. He's worked hard at it as he's not a natural athlete but he's got his just rewards," said Bettinelli, who was part of the Bermuda national team's coaching team for the World Cup qualifiers and Digicel Cup campaign in 2008.
"He was in the squad that travelled to the Europa Cup final and that was a good experience for him. I think that experience has given him the motivation to move onto the next level.
"That was a fantastic journey for Fulham to reach the Europa Cup final. It was tough to lose in the manner in which we did but it was great experience for everyone involved at the club."
