Teens taste soccer big-time
(Peanuts) Blanchette, returned from England last night after an experience of a lifetime.
It remains to be seen what might transpire from the two-week training expedition, organised by Bermuda's Director of Coaching Clyde Best who accompanied the players, but the mother of Blanchette reported that both had thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
"Both have expressed their delight at the exposure they had over there and naturally they would hope to return one day, but we don't really know what's going on until we talk with Mr. Best,'' said Ms Blanchette.
"The boys said that the training they had with the clubs was new to them, indicating that some of the drills were very physical.
"Freddy said he had never had such individual attention during goalkeeping drills which he said were intense, physical but enjoyable.'' The trip to England saw the pair attend School of Excellence programmes organised by West Ham United of the Premier Division and Third Division clubs Leyton Orient and Barnet.
Before leaving for England, Best said that the two local boys had all the qualities to go a long way in soccer, pointing out that they were not only talented for their ages but they were also good students and determined to succeed in life.
The boys' parents agreed to have them visit England because they were top grade students in Bermuda.
Both are members of the Bermuda Under-15 national squad. Hall is 14-years-old, a goalkeeper and a student at Mount St. Agnes while midfielder Blanchette is 13-years-old and a student at Saltus where he has a five-year scholarship.
The two were also prominent members of the Kenny Thompson squad that participated in the Holland youth tournament last summer.
Hall was the team captain and Blanchette vice-captain. The two are expected to tour Holland again with the team this summer.
"The families are pleased that the boys have had an opportunity to experience what lies ahead should they one day have a chance to play professionally. Most importantly though is the fact that they are both of high academic standard and we will continue to support them both in their school work and in what careers they may eventually want to pursue,'' added Vashun's mother.
