Concern at flagging respect for Pope
Concern has been expressed about flags not being shown at half-mast throughout Hamilton as a mark of respect for the Pope.
Meanwhile, the public is invited to a memorial mass for the late Pope John Paul II tomorrow at 7.30 p.m. at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Cathedral.
Rev. Pat Aiello said Anglican clergyman Andrew Doughty is set to deliver one of the addresses at the Cathedral situated at the corner of Cedar and Elliott Streets, Hamilton.
Yesterday Catholic Florindo Canale rang The Royal Gazette to complain about flags not flown at half-mast throughout Hamilton while other nations had shown this mark of respect for John Paul II.
The tribute included the White House which lowered its flags yesterday. "He was a head of state who represented one billion people," said Mr. Canale.
Rev. Aiello said he understood the matter was being looked at by the Cabinet Office. He added: "We didn't make the complaint."
Repeated calls to the Cabinet Office by The Royal Gazette were not returned yesterday. Deputy Governor Nick Carter said flags at Government House had been flown at half-mast on Sunday and the Bermuda Government had been notified.
"It is up to the Bermuda Government to follow this or not."
