Flatts wants CCTV to monitor traffic
traffic, a community campaigner has claimed.
W.A. (Toppy) Cowen, the chairman of Flatts Development Committee, said Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott said he would push for the introduction of high-tech monitoring of speeders.
Mr. Cowen said the Minister had pledged to "do his utmost'' to bring in CCTV on a trial basis at Flatts Village after rejecting plans from the development committee to introduce speed bumps.
According to Mr. Cowen, Mr. Scott said he would have to discuss the matter with Home Affairs and Public Safety Minister Paula Cox.
Mr. Cowen this week told The Royal Gazette : "Alex Scott said they were exploring the possibility of installing CCTV for traffic calming.
"It was several months ago..
"We had discussions with him and he said he was going to talk to Paula Cox.
"He has given an assurance that he will do his utmost to get CCTV because they have turned down plans for speed bumps, grooved highways or a roundabout.
"We would be delighted if this was introduced because Government have rejected our other proposals because they say they are not a priority.
"We would like to have the CCTV pilot programme in Flatts.
Ideally, we would like cobblestones in the village for the historic feel, but that is not on Government's agenda.
"They say it is probably dangerous, with approaching motorcycles because of the possibility of some skidding.'' The Royal Gazette tried to contact Mr. Scott yesterday and on Tuesday, but he did not return calls.
Ms Cox could not be contacted yesterday.
