Around the Bermuda Courts

A Warwick man pleaded guilty to stealing coins and jewellery last week in Magistrates? Court, but will be sentenced in a higher court.

Sonny Norman Bell, 47, of Cobbs Hill, pleaded guilty to dishonestly receiving a gold chain, three gold rings and a gold earring.

The court heard that the complainant?s husband secured the home before he left for work that day. When he returned, he noticed the back door was unlocked and items in the home were missing. He made a report to Police that same day.

Bell was arrested later that day for another matter and appeared nervous during questioning. Officers searched him and found a plastic bag filled with coins and pieces of jewellery.

The defendant was asked who the coins and jewellery belonged to but he didn?t answer. He was arrested for suspicion of burglary.

Bell later told Police that some of it was a birthday present and the rest he was going to sell.

He explained that he steals jewellery and gives it to a friend to sell. He in turn gets 20 per cent of the profit.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner could not sentence Bell because he had received a two year suspended sentence and three years probation in Supreme Court at an earlier hearing.

If he violated his probation, the sentence could be activated.

Mr. Warner remanded Bell in custody and sent his case to Supreme Court for sentencing.

A St. George?s man charged with assaulting two Police officers denied the charges in Magistrates? Court.

La-Mar Bean, 24, of Old Military Lane, pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault to Police officers causing bodily harm and one count of violently resisting arrest.

He was bailed in the amount of $1,000 and will appear for trial on April 23.

And Brian Trott, 38, was arrested on December 3 for drink driving. Trott, of Smith?s Hill Road, St. George?s, had a blood alcohol level of 221 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Cannabis possession

A Pembroke man was fined for possession of cannabis last week but told the court he no longer uses the drug.

Kevin Smith, of Princess Estate, was arrested for possessing the drug on Ord Road, Paget, last year.

The 26-year-old pleaded guilty to possessing 0.97 grams of the drug on July 21, 2006. He has two previous convictions for possession of cannabis.

He said: ?I don?t smoke herb no more. My psychiatrist is trying to get me into a drug programme to help me.?

Magistrate Archibald Warner fined the man $800 and wished him good luck.
