PHC march on as Colts veterans fail to impress
PHC once again emphasised their pedigree as cup giants, strolling to an easy win over a jaded Devonshire Colts outfit in this FA Cup quarter-final tie at PHC Stadium.
While the slim scoreline would appear to indicate a close affair, the match was anything but, as the young Zebras dominated from start to finish and if not for several glaring miscues Colts could have packed their bags long before half-time.
Time and again PHC were thwarted by inaccurate shooting or the prowess of Randy Darrell, in goal for Colts.
The visitors, who have enjoyed a lean season to date, turned to their veterans in an attempt to rejuvenate the club, with Jeff Richardson being brought up from Commercial Division outfit Devonshire Colts All-Stars to bolster the attack, while coach Lorenzo Symonds also started. Leonard Hypolite was similarly welcomed back into the fold, but none of the three were particularly effective.
Hypolite, his right knee in a brace, hobbled off in the 38th minute after aggravating the injury and Symonds, once a graceful midfielder and former Bermuda international, was a mere shadow of his former self, finally being substituted in the 52nd minute.
For PHC, warhorse Sheridan Ming showed that he still has a lot of gas left in his tank as he almost singlehandedly kept his opponents on the defensive for the majority of the first half.
In the 16th minute Ming fired the first telling blow via a 23-yard thunderbolt that Darrell collected on the second attempt.
Ming was in the thick of the action again in the 23rd minute this time weaving his way past two defenders near the edge of the right side of the penalty area before letting rip a low drive that Darrell had to be alert to pounce on.
Two minutes later Darrell was forced to poke away another solid shot by right-back Damon Francis, who caused problems with his roaming along the right flank.
Ming should have put PHC ahead in the 31st minute, but missed a sitter from nine yards, blasting the ball over the crossbar much to the partisan crowd's dismay.
However, with PHC dominating every facet of the game it was only a matter of time before the Zebras would take advantage and the inevitable goal came in the 59th minute as perseverance by Shawn Simons paid off handsomely.
Colts appeared to have stifled a raid spearheaded by Kenny Burt on the left side, but their slowness in clearing allowed Simons to regain possession, dribble to the right side of the penalty area and squeeze a shot past Darrell at the near post.
Those expecting the goal to raise Colts from their slumber would be mistaken as PHC continued to run roughshod over their opponents.
Substitute Marvin Lewis produced the first shot on goal for Colts in the 67th minute as he ran free along the right side, but goalkeeper Ty Williams used his legs to block away the attempt.
