Students get a chance to represent Bermuda at the United Nations in New York

Big day: A previous group of students from Bermuda who visited the United Nations in New York. This picture was taken in March 2008. There is another opportunity for students from the Island to visit the world heaquarters of the UN for those participating in the Bermuda Youth Harvesting Conference later this week.

High school students will have the chance to compete for a spot to represent Bermuda at the United Nations.

Students will be invited to explain why they should be selected for the New York trip at the Bermuda Youth Harvesting Conference this week.

One hundred students in public and private schools have been asked to attend.

The theme is 'Putting the YOU in University'.

Organiser Sarah Fellows explained what the students will do during the two-day conference.

"Students will arrive at 8.30 a.m. and will then be introduced to their task. The winning team will be asked to produce a TV show on careers for their peers."

The students will be placed within a group sharing their career interest. Groups for underwriters, lawyers, human resources, marketing, hospitality, house care will all be included as well as one for students who don't know what they want to be yet.

Mrs. Fellows continued: "Those two days will determine the scholarships available, what they would need to graduate with to get into college, which colleges are the most popular in their areas, the cost relative to getting through the college/university stage [and] which community service and extra-curricular activities will be available on Island.

"It's very intense but it's a lot of fun. The children are really put to task and produce brilliant work."

Representatives from PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ariel Re, National Training Board, Bermuda Hospitals Board, The Department of Tourism, ABIR, ABIC, BFIS, CellularOne and the XL Foundation have offered to donate two days to work at the conference.

Student teams will be asked to complete certain tasks in their industry, some of which will be judged by leading local businessmen.

The winning team will be invited to produce The Youth Harvesting Career Multi Media Campaign, with each student individually scored.

Participants will be judged on their dress, overall etiquette, presentation and resume.

They will also be marked on their personal statement "Why should you be sent to New York to represent Bermuda at The United Nations".

The conference will be held this Thursday and Friday at XL's Bermudiana Road offices.
