Football star Tucker earns NJCAA honour

Bermudian Troy Tucker has become the first freshman in Darton College history to earn First Team All-American honours from the school’s football programme.Tucker, along with team-mate Diego Ramos, was named earlier this week by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) at their national office for his achievements in the 2010/11 season.“Both of them are certainly deserving of this honour,” said Darton College coach Bart Sasnett.“We have a lot of good players, but these two are great, these are the kind of players that take you to the national tournament.”The defensive midfielder was so focused on pushing his team to a national championship that he apparently didn’t realise that he was putting himself in a position to receive the prestigious award.“Diego told me I had a chance to get it,” Tucker said. “I didn’t really know what it was, I just knew it was something good.”Tucker scored six goals including an equaliser that tied his team for third place with Tyler Community College at the 2011 NJCAA Soccer Championships in Phoenix, Arizona. He was also named in First Team All Region XVII.Darton won the Southeast District Championships and Region XVII Championships to clinch their second consecutive NJCAA Championship Tournament berth.Colleges from as far away as Detroit have reportedly been looking after Tucker, who said the only decision he’s made so far regarding his eventual transfer is to stay another year at Darton College.Ramos, a sophomore from Florida, led the league in assists with 30, while scoring 17 goals, and was also awarded Region XVII Player of the Year.“I was very happy,” he said. “That was a goal I’ve had since coming back this season; to be an All American.”Ramos committed to University of West Florida on Monday, and plans to transfer in the fall of 2012.“They’re great guys,” continued coach Sasnett. “They’ve been an excellent representation of the Darton College soccer programme and the institution.”
