Bermudian arrested trying to sneak into US
A Bermudian man could face up to two years in prison for trying to sneak into the United States.
Jeremy Gene Whitecross, 30, was arrested in Robbinston, Maine last Monday.
The Bangor Daily News reported that US Border Patrol agents were alerted that Whitecross was attempting to gain access to the country by Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
The RCMP had received information that a dark-skinned male stole a small boat in St. Andrews, New Brunswick.
US court documents stated that Whitecross was found by US agents lying in a ditch near a cannery.
The Bangor Daily News stated that Whitecross had been refused access, at the Calais boarder crossing on Sunday July 16, due to his criminal background.
The paper stated that a criminal background check revealed 1998 convictions in Bermuda for fraud, check forgery and stealing two motor cycles.
He is currently being held in the Penobscot County Jail until his trial.
If convicted he could serve two years and face a fine as high as $250,000. He would also be deported after he served his time.
