Zeiko Lewis agrees new deal with Charleston Battery

Best yet to come: Zeiko Lewis is aiming to build on a promising first season at Charleston Battery

Zeiko Lewis is anxious to get back on the pitch after accepting the terms of a new deal at USL Championship side Charleston Battery.

“It’s a great feeling to be resigned,” the Bermuda forward told The Royal Gazette. “I can’t wait to get the season under way.”

Charleston were more than keen to have retained Lewis’s services and for good reason as he was their joint leading scorer along with team-mate Nicque Daley last season with six goals in 15 appearances. He also had two assists.

It is the second straight season that he has led his team’s scoring, with his tally falling just two shy of his haul from the previous campaign.

Lewis also earned USL Player of the Week honours and named as Charleston’s Offensive Player of the Year by his team’s fans for the second time last term.

“It’s shaping up to be an exciting 2021 season for the Battery attack with Zeiko’s return,” the club said in a statement confirming Lewis’s whereabouts for next season.

Charleston finished second in group H during the regular season, three points behind group winners Tampa Bay Rowdies, who secured home-field advantage in the play-offs.

Tampa completed their 16 matches of the regular season while Charleston played 15.

Charleston were due to play Loudoun United FC in their final game of the regular season, but the rest of the campaign was cancelled because of multiple positive Covid-19 cases within the Loudoun organisation and no room for rescheduling before the play-offs.

This resulted in league officials applying the points-per-game model voted on by the USL Championship Board of Governors to determine final group standings and home advantage for play-off games.

Charleston reached the Eastern Conference semi-final for the first time in four years where they lost 1-0 to Tampa at Al Lang Stadium to put paid to their bid for a fifth USL Championship.

“Feel a little bitter about how last season ended,” Lewis said. “So we want to make amends and go even further than last year.”
