Teen debaters shine at Regional Youth Parliament

Two young Bermudian debaters impressed those in attendance at the Regional Youth Parliament meeting in Trinidad.

Jacari Brimmer-Landy and Jayson Jackson represented Bermuda at the conference last week in the Caribbean Island.

Government Senate Leader David Burch told Senators on Monday that Bermuda should be proud of them. Thirty-four delegates from 19 countries across the Caribbean attended the conference. Sen. Burch said he was present for the debate 'That Caribbean governments take immediate action to establish dedicated national youth crime service units within the ministry that addresses matters of national security'.

He said: "Madame President, you will not be surprised to learn that I found this topic of particular interest. Jacari Brimmer-Landy was chosen to present the motion and then sum up the debate as the Minister of National Security.

"To say that he did an outstanding job would be an understatement. He presented the argument to support the motion in a concise, cogent and confident manner and so persuasive was he in his summing up that one opposition member voted in support of his motion."

Sen. Burch continued: "Jayson Jackson was placed on the opposition team and given the portfolio of Shadow Sports Minister. He enthusiastically used facts and figures to inform the house about recent efforts of the Bermuda Government to financially aid sporting bodies to encourage positive youth behaviour.

"A colourful animated young man, Jayson so impressed the judges, comprised of two Trinidadian Ministers and the Speaker of the House, the Hon. Wade Mark, that he was selected as the most outstanding debater, an outstanding achievement particularly as the standard of debate was extremely high."

Sen. Burch also attended the Regional Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference. He was accompanied by Dame Jennifer Smith and Shadow Health Minister Louise Jackson.

Culture Minister Neletha Butterfield, Senator Jeanne Atherden and former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith also travelled to Trinidad last week to attend the Women's Parliamentary Conference in Port-of-Spain. Its theme was 'Modernisation of Parliament: Forging the Way Ahead'.
