Dellwood Primary School -- where he began his career as a teacher.

Mr. Butler will take up the post at the start of the next school year in September, Mr. Robert Horton of the Education Ministry said in a statement yesterday.

In the 12 years he served as headmaster of St. George's Secondary School, he introduced a number of new programmes.

But his main aim was to improve discipline in the school.

"He is pleased with the extent to which improvements in that regard are evident,'' Mr. Horton said.

"He has encouraged the establishment of after-school clubs and the involvement of the community in the schools. And the attendance of parents at PTA meetings has increased in response to his efforts.'' One of the programmes Mr. Butler introduced was the skills improvement programme which focussed on raising the level of achievement in English, mathematics and vocabulary.

He also saw to the upgrading the science labs, reintroduction of a foreign language class, and the expansion of the sports programme to include basketball for both girls and boys.

And he has supported the performing arts programme which was transferred to St. George's with the closure of Devonshire Academy.

His experience as a teacher at Dellwood, together with his secondary school experience, will help him prepare primary pupils well for the next phase of their education, Mr. Horton said.
