Bermuda Ladies Hockey Association league at the weekend.
On Saturday, Cardinals edged Canaries 2-1 as Jobs Verkaaih tapped in the winning goal with the final touch of the game. Cardinals had been awarded a penalty corner as a result of a stick tackle inside the circle. Verkaaih found the ball at her feet and ripped it past the goalkeeper.
Brenda Smith had opened the scoring for Cardinals on another chance from a penalty corner three minutes into the match. Canaries scored the equaliser on a Rhonda Rawlins stroke from a penalty corner 10 minutes into the second half.
On Sunday, Longtails took their chance to move into second spot. After a hesitant first half when excellent goalkeeping by Fiona Doe in the Orioles goal had kept the game scoreless, Longtails finally overwhelmed their tiring opponents, many of whom were playing back-to-back games.
After six minutes Joanne Wilson failed to convert a penalty stroke, pushing the ball wide of the goal. Wilson made amends after 20 minutes, however, as she unleashed a fierce shot from the top of the circle.
Five minutes later Donna Rawlins failed with a penalty attempt but within a minute Wilson had added another.
Orioles, under constant pressure, allowed Lisa Rawlins to score again and Wilson completed her hat-trick in the last minute to give Longtails a 4-0 victory.
In B League action, Canaries fashioned a 1-0 victory over luckless Bluebirds as Samantha Adams fired a shot into the net past the helpless 'keeper one minute before half-time.
The young Swifts stretched their unbeaten run to five games as they drew 1-1 with Orioles. Jayne Ward opened the scoring for Orioles as she dribbled through a non-existant Swifts defence nine minutes into the game. Swifts replied eight minutes from the end through Caroline Black, who scored from a short corner.
