Etiquette class proves popular for young girls

The Art of Fine Dining: Greg Wilson of Greg's Steakhouse helps participants at the summer 09 etiquette workshops navigate the niceties of dining out.

Etiquette — "the customary code of polite behaviour in a society" may seem part of a dim and distant past with the current prevalence of profanity, fashion of questionable taste and drive-by shootings, but such is not the case for Shawnette Somner.

Nor for the scores of young girls who have attended her series of workshops, the latest of which are being offered on Saturday mornings beginning April 17.

Ms Somner, an experienced teacher who has worked with young people for 26 years, organised her first etiquette class for girls in July 2002, and since then over 180 young women have attended her workshops.

There are two series of ten workshops being offered on Saturday mornings at Christ Church, Warwick: for Primary 5 and 6 girls and for Middle School students.

Each class costs $30, and past participants have felt that it is money well-spent.

Evaluation forms submitted by participations include comments from Scarlett, who noted, "The thing I most enjoyed is meeting new people that are now my friends and how we did activities with the other girls.

"I have learned how to clean my face properly. how to have good posture and manners. When I first heard about this etiquette class I didn't want to come but I love this class! You are truly a perfect and fun teacher to be around."

Christia was another young lady who was dubious at first, but came to enjoy herself: "My experience at Etiquette class was excellent!

"I admit that when my mom first told me I would be learning etiquette, I was a bit reluctant. Thank you very much for all the fun and knowledge."

Summing up her experience, Brianae declared, "I had a great time in the class and I enjoyed all the activities. This is one of the best camps I have ever been to."

Ms Somner explained that the programme "encourages young ladies to be just that — young ladies — and to make wise choices".

The ten sessions planned for this spring will include but are not limited to personal hygiene and grooming (including skin and nail care), appropriate attire and public speaking.

Participants are promised the opportunity "to meet new friends in a fun, nurturing, friendly, comfortable atmosphere".

During the ten-week period, the young ladies will receive "some 'polishing' in the areas of self-esteem, self-presentation and selflessness," Ms Somner elaborated.
