Nine-man Roots surge into second
Nine-man Dandy Town Roots came from behind to defeat Lobster Pot and move up to second place in the Commercial A on Saturday.
Roots? Michael Wells was given his marching orders in the opening 20 minutes for cursing to himself in an otherwise uneventful first half.
And the second half saw Roots? Mark Trott and Pot?s Martin Godley dismissed for the same reasons as the BFA carry out a hard-line swearing clampdown.
With 15 minutes remaining, Lobster Pot took the lead through a rare shot but Roots then stepped up a gear and equalised when a Gershon Gibbons effort was fumbled over the line by the Pot keeper. With five minutes remaining, Roots Lorenzo Simons was put clear through on goal and gave the keeper no chance.
Roots, who were nearly relegated last year, now stand just three points behind North Village Rams with a game in hand.
Roots captain Lloyd Christopher said: ?Consistency has been the key this season with players coming out each week.?
BAA and Robin Hood fought out a 2-2 draw in the mud of BAA field. Robin Hood broke the deadlock with a finely-taken goal after some very neat approach work. This setback seemed to spur Wanderers on and after a sustained spell of pressure, Tommy Gribbon continued his excellent run of form with a well-taken goal at the back post from an in-swinging corner. Robin Hood were now on the back foot and only two magnificent saves from their ?keeper kept them level until a Martin Jones wonder strike from 30 yards dipped under the cross bar with ten minutes remaining. However Hood, fighting off relegation, tore back into it, forcing the ball over the line in the dying minutes.
Meanwhile Tuff Dogs pulled clear of the drop zone with a useful 3-0 win over struggling PHC via goals from Chris Pett, Jeff Franklin and Kevin Mooney.
Group B leaders St. George?s All-Stars bounced back from their first loss last week with a 7-0 hammering of Somerset Bridge Peskies. The All-Stars dominated the game throughout and could have scored as many as a dozen goals but for a glut of poor finishing.
As it was All-Stars only managed a 2-0 first half lead thanks to goals from veteran Calvin Rayner and fellow striker Stevie Dickinson. After the break the rout took off with five more unanswered goals scored by Kenneth Bartram, Franklin Greaves, a second from Rayner, Ronnie Denbrook and a fine headed effort from Delbert Minors.
Fast improving Pest Control grabbed a share of the points against Devonshire Lions in a thrilling end-to-end 1-1 draw. Both teams started well creating chances at both ends before Lions opened the scoring on 20 minutes with a well-taken finish from Gary (Tuba) Mallory after a defence-splitting run and some neat forward play with Dwayne (liquid) Bean. Pest Control came out after the break firing on all cylinders and were soon on level terms through an unstoppable Noel Edness screamer from the top left corner of the box. Both teams searched for the winner but both defences, keepers and the woodwork worked overtime to keep the scores level. Meanwhile Devonshire All-Stars beat Boulevard 3-0 after two Arnold Todd goals and one from John Corday.
The only scheduled C Division game failed to go ahead as Prison Officers picked up three points after a no-show from Wolves.
