Congratulations and condolences

Delegated Affairs Minister the Hon. Sir John Sharpe told of "three inspirational experiences'' he had in Warwick on Sunday (May 16).
He attended the Special Olympics at PHC Stadium and congratulated the Olympians for their courage, as well as the "designated huggers'' who took part.
Secondly, he heard the Geoffrey Tankard Singers at St. Mary's Church in Warwick. Sir John noted the event raised money to train young Bermudian musicians.
Finally, he attended a memorial service at St. Mary's for Dr. Alfreda Anne Elizabeth Simons Kartha, the daughter of Mrs. Ruth Simons and the late Mr.
Clarence Simons. Environment Minister the Hon. Gerald Simons , Mrs. Kartha's cousin, spoke movingly about the nurse and university lecturer, whose funeral was conducted at the Anglican Cathedral in London, Ontario, he noted.
Shadow Education Minister Ms Jennifer Smith offered congratulations to the nine Bermuda artists honoured for long service on Thursday night by the Ministry of Culture and Communications.
They were Mrs. Georgina Hill, Mr. Cecil Smith, Mrs. Maurine Cooper, Mr. Vernon Gandhi Burgess, Mrs. Louise Jackson, Mrs. Patricia Gray, Mr. Desmond Fountain, Mrs. Connie Dey, and Mrs. Marjorie Pettit.
Ms Smith also congratulated National PTA president Mrs. Marian Askia, who was recently honoured by the Association of School Principals for her contributions to education.
Education Minister the Hon. Clarence Terceira congratulated Sandys Secondary School principal Mr. Melvyn Bassett and French teacher Mrs. Joseline Philip for recently hosting exchange students from Guadeloupe.
Shadow Health and Social Services Minister Mr. Nelson Bascome congratulated the participants in the second annual gombey dancing competition held on Saturday (May 15) at the Belmont Hotel.
Mr. Bascome also congratulated Bermuda Graphics and Promotions, which has put out a map for visitors showing the location of shops. Mr. Bascome extended a welcome to students from Prospect Primary and other visitors in the public gallery.
Tourism Minister the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge extended condolences to the widow of Rev. Ernest Redfern, the assistant minister at St. Mark's Church in Smith's.
Born in England, Rev. Redfern married into the Ingham family and worked in banking for many years before entering the ministry, Mr. Woolridge said. Rev.
Redfern was "a man who had given much to the community of Bermuda.'' Community, Culture and Information Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons sent congratulations to the Bermuda Suzuki Association for its piano recital last Sunday featuring 13-year-old Miss Mandy Wong, "one of our talented young people.'' Mr. Gibbons also noted it was Heritage Month. A boat made from Bermuda cedar which Mr. Barry Brewer recently restored after finding it at Mill Creek was built by Mr. Gibbons' grandfather, the House was told.
