First tour for youth rugby squad

success in Boston, as the under-15 and under-18 teams both won one of their two matches against school teams.

In their opening games last Friday the under-15s -- playing two 20-minute halves -- beat a Boston College high school 7-5 in their first match as a team. A last minute try by Chris Collette, which he also converted, sealed the win for Bermuda.

The older boys, playing 35-minute halves, went down 40-10 to a much stronger and more experienced Boston College team after trailing 30-0 at the half. An improved second half saw the Bermuda side hold their opponents, with both teams putting 10 points on the board.

The try scorer for Bermuda was Rick Bartlett. It was converted by captain Ryan Davidge who also kicked a penalty.

On Saturday, the touring teams took on Brookline High. The under-15s lost 15-0 to a much more experienced side, though they turned in a strong performance, while the under-18s notched a a 15-5 victory.

Tries were scored by James Hillier and Ross Mancell, while captain Davidge kicked a conversion and penalty.

"It was the first ever youth rugby tour from Bermuda and they did tremendously well,'' said Youth Development Officer and coach Grant Tomkins upon the team's return.

"We took over some 30 youngsters and we would be hard-pressed to pick out two or three individuals because they all played just tremendously.''
