Big-hitting Wainwright crushes Bay
Bailey's Bay 160
Southampton 163-2
Another fine all-round performance from veteran Keith Wainwright saw Southampton claim a comfortable eight-wicket win over Bailey's Bay at Sea Breeze Oval yesterday.
Following on the heels of an unbeaten 89 last weekend, the BCBC first vice-president went even better as he blasted an unbeaten century (100) during his team's pursuit of Bay's modest total.
Opening the innings for Southampton, Wainwright picked up where he left off, smashing Brent Outerbridge's first delivery through the gully for four.
However, on the very next ball Wainwright was given a life when Ricky Hill, fielding at first slip, spilled an offering.
Wainwright made Bay pay for that error, cracking successive fours off Outerbridge while at the other end David Ferreira (29) opened his account with a boundary, glancing Kamel Trott through third man for four.
The opening pair added 74 for the first wicket before Ferreira had his off stump pushed back after Dennis Pilgrim was brought into the attack.
Jermaine Outerbridge was also called upon to tidy things up as he bowled a steady line and length that had the hard- hitting Stevie Lightbourne (14) playing on the front foot.
But at the other end, Wainwright continued the onslaught, punishing anything short of a length with a series of classic drives through the covers or over the long-off boundary.
He and Lightbourne added another 78 runs for the second wicket. Lightbourne also lived a charmed life as Desmond Crockwell dropped him at short long off.
But after 16 overs, Bay finally decided to turn to their 14-year-old off-spinner Rodney Trott\, and immediately the move paid dividends as the youngster had Lightbourne stumped by wicketkeeper Roderick Masters, although by then victory and Wainwright's first century in over two seasons remained well in sight.
The burly batsman eventually pushed a single through mid-wicket to reach triple digits.
Three deliveries later, Ricky Brangman ended Bay's misery with a six over long off, Rangers reaching their target in just 25.5 overs.
Wainwright's innings comprised of 13 fours and four sixes with his century coming in 130 minutes off 97 balls.
Earlier, after the umpires had reduced the match to a 48-over contest due to an unprepared pitch, Bay found themselves in trouble at 87 for six before Pilgrim continued to make an impression on the Somerset Cup Match selectors, coming in at number eight to crack a whirlwind 65 off just 45 balls.
Pilgrim's brisk innings contained seven fours and four sixes.
Dennis Trott (29), Masters (16) and Crockwell (13) also made useful contributions with the bat.
Ryan Belboda was the pick of the Southampton bowling, capturing two wickets for 20 runs while Wainwright had two for 37 and Clevie Wade two for 53.

Cleveland 221-8
Cleveland won this Premier Division game by two wickets at Wellington Oval, the game ending after 8 p.m. having been delayed because of a hole in the wicket which hampered the bowler's run-up.
