Implement a child abuse registry, urges Senator Roberts-Holshouser
Senator Suzann Roberts Holshouser is calling on Government to act on legislation passed over a decade ago and implement a child abuse registry.
Without one there is "no way of safeguarding our children", she told Senate members this week.
Mrs. Roberts Holshouser submitted Parliamentary Questions to Junior Minister for Culture and Social Rehabilitation Thaao Dill, asking for an update on the status of the register and whether it would be retroactive to its 1998 legislation.
She also asked for the number of persons jailed for child and sex abuse and the number of repeat offenders imprisoned for the same.
The Opposition Senator later told The Royal Gazette: "If I could just save one child from the horrendous nightmare of being either abused or sexually abused through my persistence of pursuing legislation that was passed in 1998, then I not only would have met the objectives of legislature but I would be grateful to have saved the light in a child's eyes that is removed and replaced with experiences and memories they don't deserve to have.
"I am not a psychiatrist but I have read and researched this issue and believe we must protect our children."
