Silence is painful to the soul .^.^.
THIS letter will be blunt and to the point: I am appalled at the way the current batch of elected Progressive Labour Party MPs are conducting themselves.
Closest to my immediate anger is my own representative Mr. Arthur Pitcher, who despite his home-grown family name has sold us down the river for personal profit.
Even more of an insult is, even though this representative can hardly be described as loquacious, I would have thought that at long last he had a duty to open his mouth in Parliament last Friday and give a direct account of the asbestos removal procedures used by his company.
I live just downwind on the site in question. I intend to have my tank water sediment, and the topsoil on my property tested for asbestos, even though this may be tedious and difficult. If it should transpire that there has been some release into the environment, Mr. Pitcher -- and his entire Government -- will be facing multiple lawsuits.
I suspect, however, he and the Health Minister have had premonitions of such justifiable reactions on behalf of the St. David's residents. That is the most likely reason for the spine-chilling silence of Mr. Arthur Pitcher and Mr.
Nelson Bascome! The lawyers have no doubt already advised the "New'' Bermuda Government as to how to escape liability for multiple cases of long-term debilitating lung fibrosis. No doubt they have reminded our MPs, that in 20 years time, when the first cases become apparent, they will almost certainly be dispersed throughout the island, as will the future adults -- once children from the neighbourhood.
As for today's adults they will be old then, and no one will make the distinction between asbestos-lung and age-related fibrotic or neoplastic lung disorders. We have a doctor in the house! Well, that's a joke. Where are his ethics? His main contribution to Bermuda's legislation last week was to make it possible to purchase personalised licence plates for the ever-growing, ever-polluting cars on the streets.
The shrill Renee Webb has the gall to challenge the Opposition to spend next Friday's session praising Government! She is so stuck in her own private plantation world, where she legitimises all her own cast-iron prejudices, that I am sure she will run interference if the very real concerns of very real people are represented. Where are all the good people of Bermuda? The collective silence and denial is painful to the soul.
ST. DAVID'S ARCHIPELAGO MPs: Start walking or thumb a lift June 28, 2000 IN order to ease traffic congestion, former Minister of Transport Wayne Furbert has suggested that a certain section of society be denied ownership of cars.
However, I feel Mr. Furbert should be encouraging his fellow politicians to lead by example. They should be the ones who take to the pavements. The elected servants of the people would benefit from meeting and hearing the opinions of the electorate while walking or thumbing a lift.
I'm sure they would hear how much damage will be done to the island's overall economy if the current discrimination against expatriates is allowed to continue.
Of course, there would then be the question of what to do with politicians' cars, particularly those expensive, oversized, Ministerial Peugeot 406s. How about the old-fashioned remedy of creating landfill with them on which to build either Government housing or a new Tourism Ministry? LITTLE BUTTERCUP Southampton
