New Year’s Day costly for unlicensed driver
A Southampton man was taken off the road for six months today after admitting he failed to stop for police after driving past them on an unlicensed, uninsured motorbike and without a helmet, saying “Hello, gentlemen.”
Jahkai Dillis, 28, was fined $100 for driving without a helmet, $200 for failing to maintain his tyres, $250 for use of an unlicensed motorbike, $500 for driving without third party insurance, and $300 for failing to stop for police.
Prosecutor Cindy Clarke told the Magistrates’ Court that Dillis drove past the officers on New Year’s Day around 3.50pm.
Officers waved at Dillis to stop as he approached them but Dillis kept driving, said Ms Clarke.
After the officers turned on their sirens, Dillis accelerated, leading them on a chase into his own back yard.
Asked by the officers to come out of his house, Dillas pleaded with them, saying: “Come on, it’s New Year’s Day. This is my neighbourhood.”
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Dillis a total of $1350 and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for six months.
