'I did not stab Kellon Hill' – defendant tells jury

'I did not stab Kellon Hill' Kellan Jearreau Lewis arriving at court

Murder-accused Kellan Jearreau Lewis repeatedly told a Supreme Court jury: "I did not stab Kellon Hill".

The court heard from the 17-year-old again yesterday as cross examination by Crown prosecutor Michael McColm continued.

Mr. McColm quizzed Lewis on his alleged role in the murder of Mr. Hill and the fight in which he was killed.

Yesterday, Lewis claimed the violence flared after he called Mr. Hill's cousin a "sissy" as a joke, then made another joke about his mother.

He alleged that Mr. Hill took offence and spat in his face, leading to a fight.

Lewis, the one remaining defendant of five originally accused of murdering Mr. Hill took the Supreme Court stand in his own defence yesterday.

Mr. Hill died of a stab wound to the heart sustained as he left a late night party at Elbow Beach last August 9.

Prosecutors allege that Lewis had a knife with him that night and used it to stab Mr. Hill in the chest and body.

Mr. McColm put to Lewis that when the fight began, he was with Gary Hollis when he approached Mr. Hill and then snatched Mr. Hill's chain.

Lewis disagreed and said: "I told you yesterday that a bike pulled up next to me and I hailed Kellon Hill."

He also repeated that when he called Diondea Symons a "sissy", it was just a joke. "I didn't think that would be offensive to anyone. I said it in a joking way and I didn't have nothing to do with him. I was talking to Kellon. I wasn't talking to Diondea."

Mr. Lewis continued: "It was a mother joke. It wasn't nothing serious. I wasn't trying to offend him. Everybody jokes about mother jokes."

Mr. McColm moved to the actual fight and questioned Lewis on whether Mr. Hill had actually spat in his face.

"This must have made you very angry for someone to spit in you face after a joke," he said.

Lewis said he couldn't recall how he was feeling at the time and said he just "reacted".

Mr. McColm then said: "And you reacted with violence didn't you?"

Lewis agreed.

The prosecutor alleged the witness deliberately grabbed the chain from Mr. Hill's neck but Lewis disagreed and said he pulled Mr. Hill's neck to get him off the bike. He said: "Kellon got off the bike. The chain slipped out of my hand. It just dropped out of my hand. I can't tell you how but it just slipped."

Lewis said he "backed away" from Mr. Hill when he got off the bike because he pulled off his helmet. He said he turned around and then he heard "crash crash".

Asked where Mr. Hollis was during the fight. Lewis said: "I don't know where he came from. I just looked up and saw him getting hit. He was right next to Kellon Hill."

Mr. McColm then asked Lewis why he ran away when he initially wanted to pull Mr. Hill off the bike. Lewis said: "Mr. McColm, I just told you he pulled off his helmet."

Speaking about the fight again, Lewis said: "I just heard screaming behind me. I heard 'give me back my chain' and crash crash at the same time.

"Gary was just dropping out like. Gary was just getting hit."

Lewis said when Mr. Hollis was being hit, he didn't turn back to help him because a crowd came around the fight and he couldn't see anything.

Mr. McColm pushed him further. "So your little mate's getting beaten up for no reason and you just stood where you were? Is that the truth?"

Lewis said 'yes' and referred to the fight as a "brawl".

The witness again admitted punching Mr. Hill but said repeatedly that he didn't stab him and didn't know who had.

He said during the fight, he was busy looking for his chain which fell off his neck when Mr. Hill grabbed him.

Mr. McColm suggested Lewis was dragged away from the fight but Lewis disagreed.

"If they tell you they done it you're going to believe them. I I tell you they didn't do it, you're not going to believe me and that's the way it goes."

Asked why he left the scene, Lewis said Zharrin Simmons pulled him away. "She said 'let's go' and I went with her. Whatever she had to tell me she would have told me. I didn't ask no questions. I just went with her."

Lewis was also quizzed on what happened when the group left the party. He told the prosecutor Mr. Hollis and Kevon Warner both took off their shirts because there was blood on them and threw them away. And he admitted he didn't ask them why blood was on their shirts.

He said they took a short cut and ended up on Ord Road where they waited for a taxi.

Asked if they spoke about Mr. Hill's death, Lewis said 'no'.

He explained he had asked Miss Simmons if she had a screwdriver and stabbed Mr. Hill but when she said no, he dropped it. Lewis said as he and Devon Hairston sat on the wall waiting for the taxi, he texted a girl named Melanie to try to go to her house but the plan fell through.

The witness said the taxi finally came and they all went to his house but were arrested a short time later by Police.
