Only five people applied to be a waiter after Government’s Hospitality Job Fair Senator Kim Wilson said.Answers to Parliamentary Questions yesterday revealed 600 people have registered as unemployed at the Department of Labour and Training.Last month 836 people filed through the Fairmont Hamilton Princess for the job fair that offered approximately 155 jobs immediately.Hundreds more jobs were advertised to begin at the start of the summer season.However, yesterday Sen Wilson said only five people applied to be a waiter, there were more than 100 positions on offer. Of the five who applied for the jobs two have been successful.Sen Wilson said: “There are a number of Bermudians not taking full advantage of the opportunities available. People have to manage their expectations, a job is better than no job.”She added that “a number of people” were hired at this month’s Landscaping Job Fair, also organised by Government.Sen Wilson reiterated she was not prepared to issue work permits in circumstances where qualified, able-bodied Bermudian applicants are capable of holding the job, but equally she was not prepared to allow local businesses to suffer due to the lack of qualified Bermudian applicants.Sen Wilson added that her Ministry is going to create an online registry of work permit requirements so that Bermudians can ensure they get the professional qualifications necessary to replace an expatriate at the end of their term.She said she was not able to cancel work permits but Bermudians would now be able to look online to see what job requirements are.Sen Wilson gave an example of an actuary saying if a work permit was granted to someone with a certain professional qualification and three years experience, a Bermudian would be able to see that and go about gaining the same qualification and experience so they could replace the person when their work permit came up for renewal.
