Open finalists move up rankings
final at Coral Beach have been rewarded with significant jumps up the ATP Tour rankings list.
Hernan Gumy, who won a titanic battle against Davis Cup team-mate and friend Lucas Arnold in the third set, has moved up 20 places to 88. Runner-up Arnold, 23, makes his first entry into the world's top 100 at 94 -- a climb of 16 places.
The powerful and well-built Gumy, who was ranked in the top 40 at one point, suffered a groin injury last year which caused him to fall out of the top 100 and threatened his career.
But he took his first steps back to that position with his 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Arnold at the weekend.
That brought him a total of 80 points as winner of an ATP Challenger event, while Arnold's share was 58 points.
The pair, who also share a coach in Alejandro Gatticker, will be hoping to pick up further points in another Challenger event -- the Eddleman/USTA in Birmingham, Alabama -- this week.
Armenian Sargis Sargsian, meanwhile, the XL Open's number one seed who went out in straight sets to Australian Andrew Ilie, drops 12 spots to number 86.
Richey Reneberg, the number two seed who was beaten by Arnold in an absorbing semi-final on Saturday, enhances his ranking, moving up 12 places to 79.
His earnings in the XL, where he won the doubles with compatriot Doug Flach, also boosted his position in the ATP Money Leaders list to 23 with $167,542 for the year so far.
Other players to enhance their positions on the ATP computer included Ilie -- up nine places to 189; Gumy's quarter-final scalp Todd Larkham -- up 12 to 178; and Argentinian Franco Squillari, the seed beaten by Gumy in the semi-finals.
1996 winner MaliVai Washington, beaten at the quarter-final stage by Reneberg, fell 21 places to 243 while his brother, Mashiska, who came through two qualifying rounds and was beaten by Reneberg in the second round of the main draw enjoyed the greatest leap -- up 78 places to 483.
