USA's Davis Cup thriller takes its toll on Reneberg Compiled by Nigel

US DAVIS CUP doubles star Richey Reneberg admitted to being drained by his team's dramatic 3-2 victory over Russia in the first round of the competition last weekend.

Reneberg, who flew directly to Bermuda from Stone Mountain, Georgia, after seeing Jim Courier clinch the tie for his side in a five set thriller, said: "I'm lucky I don't have to watch more matches because it's much more tiring to watch than it is to play, particularly that last match.'' The Open second seed, who took four sets to win his doubles match with Todd Martin in the tie, added: "The whole week there's a lot of anticipation for the matches -- it's unlike any other event in tennis, especially in the States where you feel a lot more pressure because everybody expects you to win.

"But crazy things happen in Davis Cup and every year there are some incredibly surprising upsets and really Russia, with Kafelnikov, had a good team. Just he himself was capable of winning all three matches. You don't take the number five rated guy in the world lightly in singles or doubles -- he's rated highly in doubles as well.

"And the other guy, Marat Safin, we all knew was a talented player, so we definitely didn't look at it as an easy match. But we were lucky to get out of it.'' *** THE Grunt is back. Made famous by Monica Seles from an original idea by Jimmy Connors it has now been taken, shaken and refined into an art that renders the umpire's request for "quiet, please'' during play almost redundant.

Particularly in evidence at this week's Open, it comes in many varieties, the most common of which, featured below, have been identified, with their originators, after careful scrutiny by The Royal Gazette's linguistics expert.

Noisiest is "off-wah'', used mainly by Australian Andrew Ilie to accompany a particularly vicious forehand down the line.

Most inventive is Marcelo Charpentier's "woo-aargh'' or its occasional variant "woa-aaargh'', which begins with his serve and continues in all its guises throughout the game.

Brazilian Francisco Costa's exhalation approximates to "au waargh'' or a Frenchman's expression for goodbye in its more refined version, making for an interesting soundtrack in Thursday's match with Charpentier, while Hernan Gumy makes do with a simple "heeey''.

*** MARCELO Charpentier's departure from the singles event has no doubt had a number of Bermudian parents, not to mention the more stuffy element at Coral Beach, breathing a hefty sigh of relief.

The Argentinian, who eats only fruit and carries a blender with him around the world, has won a cult following among the ball boys and girls at this week's event and they can often be seen following him around.

And rumour has it that, had he made the final, they were all planning to dye their hair the same shade of purple in honour of their hero.

*** AUSTRALIA'S Andrew Ilie is not renowned for his subtle approach to the game.

Defence is not in his dictionary and, given the opportunity, he prefers to leather each ball as if it had just insulted his mother. So, having smashed a glorious winner down the line at something approximating the speed of light against Michael Kohlmann, it was just a little surprising to hear him follow the shot up with the yell: "Hit the damn ball!''
