Residents set to meet over Belco plans

Residents in the Pembroke area concerned about the Bermuda Electric Light Company's plan to expand its power plant will hold a public meeting tomorrow night.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at Hamilton Cathedral from 6 to 8 p.m., according to a release, and will discuss centralised versus decentralised expansion and how it will affect energy and neighbourhood security, Government oversight of Belco, the planned closure of Cemetery Road and Tribe Road # 2 and the absence of a National Energy Policy.

Belco has said the company needs to build new power plants to met the Island's growing demand for electricity.

Residents of the area, namely Pembroke Valley, complain Belco supplies energy for the whole Island but that waste noise, heat, air and water pollution only affect them.

Area resident Judith Wadson said in a press release: "This is not a case of 'Nimby' — not in my back yard. This elephant has been in our front yard for decades and it's about time other areas shared the burden.

"We have to tolerate the smoke and bad smells, we have to check which way the wind blows before hanging out our washing, we have to replace window screens more frequently on the Belco side of our houses.

"And now that Belco wants to add three more smokestacks to the two we already have, we're going to be faced with more than double the trouble. That's not fair!"

Those who attend the meeting will have the chance to write letters objecting to the Planning application to be delivered before Friday's deadline for objections.
