Under-23s rarin' to take on Canadians

to coach Mark Trott, are anxious to tackle Canada on Friday as they strive to gain a berth in next year's Pan American Games finals.

Trott said yesterday that everything was in order, and apart from a minor injury worry to striker Lamaul Crofton, few problems had been experienced since their arrival on Saturday afternoon.

Trott had the side out training only hours after their landing in the largest of the English speaking Caribbean islands where the squad took up residence at the luxurious Wyndham Hotel in New Kingston.

"Everyone is in good spirits,'' said Trott, experiencing his most important overseas assignment as a national team coach. "We had a good team meeting after dinner (Sunday) which allowed individual players to voice their comments and that was really productive.

"You can see in their attitude as the days count down that they're getting more and more intense and focused.'' Meanwhile, a practice match against local area side, Harbour View, was scheduled for last night to help get the players match ready and further used to the climatic conditions.

Temperatures have averaged between 85 and 87 degrees since the team's arrival, something which Trott did not see as a major problem, but conversely could present difficulties for the Canadians, arriving from much cooler climes.

Canada were scheduled to arrive yesterday evening for the two-leg match, which will have the victors going through to face the runners-up of the Caribbean Football Union competition, in this case either Jamaica or Trinidad, who also meet this weekend.

"I would say the players are adjusting nicely to the conditions and should be fully acclimatised by game time,'' said Trott, who, along with embattled technical director Burkhard Ziese, carried out an inspection of the National Stadium's playing surface, but refused to reveal details of their findings.

Friday's match will serve as an away tie for Bermuda and starts at 5 p.m.

Bermuda time, while Sunday's match will be Bermuda's home game.
