Raneika wins two medals -- but skips CAC Games
Raneika Bean is not.
Both, however, could be headed to the Commonwealth Games.
Wellman, a world-class triple jumper who was sixth in the 1996 Olympics, heads a preliminary list of 41 Bermudians slated to take part in the Central America and Caribbean Games beginning August 9 in Maracaibo Venezuela.
But Bean, who was originally on the list of qualifiers released last week by the Bermuda Olympic Association next month, had her name withdrawn by the Bermuda Track and Field Association over fears the 15-year-old sensation has seen too much competition this year.
Bean was part of a seven-member BTFA team that returned home last night from the Cayman Islands, where they competed at the CAC Junior Track and Field Championships.
And she led the way with two medals, including a gold in the under-17 girls triple jump that qualified her for the Commonwealth Games. She set a meet record with a leap of 12.22 metres, including five jumps that eclipsed the old mark set by a Cuban.
BTFA president Judith Simmons said last night a decision had not yet been made on whether to send her to Malaysia and the Commonwealth Games in September.
In April, she appeared to have also qualified for the in the 100 metres after winning the gold medal at the Carifta Games, although her time has not been endorsed by the IAAF because the event was hand-timed.
In the Cayman Islands, she could only manage a fourth place finish in the under-17 100m final. She stumbled at the 50 metre mark and finishing in a time of 12.18 seconds after placing third in her heat with a clocking of 12.00 seconds.
In addition to her triple jump gold, she picked up a bronze in the high jump on Saturday when she was third with a leap of 1.61m, despite suffering from shin splints.
Bermuda also picked up another medal when Stacy Babb, representing the Island for the first time, grabbed the triple jump bronze in 10.55m.
Two others on the CAC list -- Tariq Hewey and Jarita Dill -- also competed.
Hewey failed to qualify for the under-20 boys 100m and 200m finals, while Dill was sixth in the girls under-20 400m final with a time of 56.51 seconds and was fourth in the 800 metres, narrowly missing a medal with a time of 2:13.90.
Others competing were Gabriel Wilkinson, Richard Walcott and Janine Scott.
In the girls under-17 400 metres, Scott was fifth in the final with a time of 57.62 seconds and on Sunday was seventh in 200m with a 25.59 clocking. Both were personal bests.
Walcott was eighth in both the boys under-15 1500m and 800m finals with a time of 4.21.22 and 2:07.82 Wilkinson was ninth in the discus with a throw of 34.61 metres and eighth in the javelin a toss of 33.22.
Wellman was not expected to take part in the CACs because many of the Island's top athletes are skipping Venezuela in order to peak for the Commonwealth Games a month later. Others are using it as a last-chance attempt to qualify for Malaysia.
For example, just two swimmers (Craig Roberts and Tamika Williams) and two sailors (Brett and Sara Wright) are on the preliminary CAC list.
However, Simmons pointed out that Wellman, Bermuda's five-time Athlete of the Year, is accustomed to the travel demands of the Grand Prix athletics circuit, in which he must be at his best nearly every week.
The Arkansas-based jumper, who will turn 31 in September, is not having one of his better seasons. Although he qualified for the Commonwealth Games with a jump of 16.98 metres at a meet in El Paso in May, he has appeared in just two Grand Prix events and has dropped out of the IAAF's 1998 rankings.
Other BTFA athletes on the CAC list include Terrance Armstrong, Rohaan Simons, Xavier James and Sheldon Thompson. Four cyclists, three triathletes and a women's hockey team are also on the list to represent the Island in Venezuela.
They could be joined by the under-23 soccer team.
