Belco completes post-Igor reconnections

Belco managed to get the last of its customers back online on Saturday, bringing an end to the Hurricane Igor blackout.

Almost 29,000 households were left without power in the aftermath of the storm on Sunday September 19.

All had been reconnected by 9.30 p.m on Saturday, with Belco spokeswoman Susan McGrath-Smith saying: "We thank the community for their patience and cooperation throughout the restoration process."

She added: "Many of the outages were caused by vegetation and it is also vegetation that slowed down work in some cases tree trimmers had to come in with chainsaws and trucks and debris had to be cleared. Belco has made a major effort to clear trees along all of the mainline circuits, and we were able to restore all of them Monday.

"We would expect to see fewer outages, and a quicker restoration process, if residents cut back trees to at least ten feet away from the lines."

She also warned:"There are a few instances of additional work required this week. We have had direct contact with the parties, there are no issues, and the work has been planned and scheduled. The most notable is Paget Island, which is a Government, non-residential property. Restoring it requires moving several crews along with required equipment to the Island. It was not possible to divert those resources from the major restoration process this past week."
