CAC glory for triathletes
There was double delight for Bermuda in the triathlon with Flora Duffy and Tyler Butterfield both celebrating medal glory at the CAC Games in Puerto Rico.
Duffy marked a remarkable return to form by winning silver in the women's event on Saturday morning while Butterfield followed up with a bronze in the men's competition.
In only her third triathlon since failing to finish at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Duffy led for much of the race before the heat and humidity took its toll on her during the run stage.
The 22-year-old, who has endured a difficult few past seasons, finished exactly one minute behind Claudia Rivas of Mexico in a time of two hours, eight minutes and 46 seconds.
She said her medal win was a 'huge step' in the right direction as she strives to rediscover her sparkling form of three years ago.
"I'm really pleased to win a medal for Bermuda," Duffy said. "I was pretty confident I could do well as my training has been going well.
"This time last year I wasn't even thinking about racing competitively in triathlon so to come back a year later and medal at the CAC Games is huge for me.
"It's a huge step in the right direction but there's still a long way to go before I'm where I want to be. I understand that and I'm only 22 so time is on my side.
"During the lead-up to Beijing I was not doing well at all so this is a big accomplishment for me and definitely gives me hope I can make it back there."
Duffy believes she could have snared a gold had she arrived in the Isle of Enchantment with her 'running legs'.
"I started the run and I was just like 'oh geez' I just didn't have my running legs with me. If I had run to my full potential then things could have been different."
Inspired by Duffy's podium finish, Butterfield then claimed Bermuda's fourth medal of the Games finishing third behind a pair of Mexicans who executed some fine team tactics.
In a show of pride for his country, the former professional cyclist ran the final kilometre of the race carrying an outstretched Bermuda flag while high-fiving the crowd.
Butterfield, who finished Saturday's race in 1.58:34, said he was thrilled to claim a medal for Bermuda and also hailed Duffy's outstanding display.
"The Mexican team raced very intelligently . . . (I was) pleased to see this type of team racing pay-off in triathlon," he said.
"It was great for Bermuda to get a silver and a bronze medal here at the Games and for the sport of triathlon in Bermuda.
"Flora had a great day, she has proved once again she is one of Bermuda's finest athletes."
Butterfield will now return to his training base in Boulder, Colorado, where he will continue with his impressive preparations for the biggest Ironman event of all – the World Championships in Hawaii later this year.
Prior to his CAC Games debut, Butterfield said he was in the best shape of his life and had never trained harder ahead of a major event.
"You never really know what will happen on the day but the signs are good," Butterfield said.
"I hope for a top ten and on a great day a top five. Obviously if there's a chance to get a medal I will give 120 percent as it would be very cool to win a medal for Bermuda."
Last week saw Bermuda win bronze medals in the bowling with Damien Matthews and shooting with Ross Roberts.
