Reds still in the driver's seat

Teachers held onto first place in the BRFU First Division with this win over a determined Mariners side on Sunday.

Wing Nathan Browne got the Reds on the scoreboard first with a try following a fine attack which saw the ball flow through a number of hands.

Flanker Bobby Hurdle, recently returned from school in Canada, then got his first score with a try after good work from the Teachers pack. And Teachers added a third try with wing Heath Robinson scoring after a break from full back Michael Montgomery. Fly half Ross Webber added the conversion.

Mariners managed to reply with a great individual effort from wing Rob Morgan after his side had won a Teachers scrum. Morgan evaded several tacklers on his way upfield, crossing the line in the corner to score.

After the half, Mariners added a second try through Keith Hodgkins and Gavin Corcoran added the conversion. But Teachers soon re-established control with Hurdle scoring his second try after a Robinson counter attack. The ball went from the wing to Alvin Harvey, Noel Capewell, Webber, Billy McNiven and then to Hurdle who slipped by a tackler to score.

Webber booted the conversion and then it was Browne who intercepted a Mariners' pass and headed up field. The ball eventually found lock Ashley Redmond who scored.

Teachers added a final try in the closing minutes of the game with number eight Patrick Cooper breaking from the tail of a line-out and feeding Harvey who scored under the posts. Webber kicked the conversion.

Renegades I 25 Police I 8 Renegades stamped out a determined but injury-hampered Police outfit during Sunday's first game.

'Gades drew first blood after a counter attack by right wing Shandy Purewal saw the ball pass quickly through several players to outside centre Mike Gorrie who fed left wing Robert Stubbs for the score.

Police replied with a Sean Field try following a close range penalty. But then Renegades regained the lead for good when scrum half Steve Given leapt on a Police error behind their own goal-line and scored.

Full back Mark Watlington added a penalty kick and inside centre Peter Shillingford scored a try which Watlington converted.

Police centre Greg Lunn notched up three more points with a penalty kick just before the interval.

After the half, Police applied the pressure through their forwards but the Renegades' defence held and it was an errant Police clearance kick to Shillingford which saw the centre collect his second try of the game.

Police II 15 Mariners II 19 A late comeback by the boys in blue wasn't quite enough as Mariners ran out winners in this second XV game at Nationals on Saturday.

Mariners jumped out to a 19 point lead through tries from Ken Anderson, Simon Van de Weg and Derek Kilcoyne along with two conversions. But Police refused to give up.

A late score from Warren Bundy before the interval reduced the arrears and after the break, Police added a try through Danny Moore and a second Bundy try to draw within four points. Further Police pressure, however, went unrewarded.
