Death of Randall Swan: Man accused of dangerous driving
A man accused of causing the death of footballer Randall Swan through dangerous driving denied the charge at the monthly Supreme Court arraignments session.
Davel Javar Smith, 29, also pleaded not guilty to causing actual bodily harm to Kion Wade through dangerous driving.
The accusations relate to a collision on South Shore Road on December 16, 2004 in which 24-year-old Mr. Swan, who played for the Dandy Town Hornets, lost his life. Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves ordered Smith, of Pembroke, to appear again before the court on April 2 for a trial date to be set. He granted him bail until that date.
Also appearing before the monthly court administration session was 34-year-old Osvaldo Botelho Madeiros, who pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Jeffery Smith through driving while impaired. The charge centres on an incident on June 5 last year on Harrington Sound Road.
Madeiros, of Hamilton Parish, also admitted a second charge, of driving with more than 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood contrary to the Road Traffic Act. He will be sentenced on April 2 and was bailed until then.
In another case, Clyde Ian Saltus, 31, will be sentenced on March 13 for obtaining $25,300 cash by false pretences from the Bank of Bermuda. He pleaded guilty at a previous court hearing to four counts in total spanning August and September 2004.
And a self-confessed heroin addict who went on a $90,000-plus burglary spree will be sentenced at Supreme Court on March 16, it was decided yesterday. Stephen Andre Wilson previously pleaded guilty to a total of 26 burglary and fraud offences.
