Hearing bad things

July 25, 2008

Dear Sir,

As I read today's paper online here in Bolton England, I have to ask: "What is Brown still doing in office?" I do mean both of them. I kept on hearing that Bermuda is a wonderful place to show the world our true open heart and love to all. Than I'm reading that Brown wants to shut down oversea office what a joke.

I was born in Bermuda and often while meeting people in England I tell them how wonderful it is to be from a very blessed Island. But when I see that he wants to take Bermudians out of New York, I find it hard to swallow. The best people that can talk about Bermuda and what it really has to offer is either the Bermudians that was born or the people that lived here for many years.

Mr. Editor, I'm asking the true Bermudians (not just by birth) to really stand together in this matter and tell Brown to get off his high horse and get out of town. I feel so let down knowing that I did vote for PLP to get into office as Government 1998 and I've heard nothing but bad things happening. Maybe the whole Government including backbenchers of both parties really needs a shaken up.

Mr. Editor, another point I have to make. When I fly back to Bermuda from UK it cost a lot more than flying from there to here. I would like to know why? Because we keep being told that we want people from this side of the world to come and visit our lovely Island but it cost almost an arm and leg to do so. Why don't they get it right and charge more to leave the Island to visit this side than charge more to visit lovely Bermuda. Bermuda stand together, because we're not alone. Love and miss you all very much.

Food for thought

Dear Sir,

We have such a demand from families and singles, in search of some place to hang their hat. Yet, there are equally many empty houses throughout the Island … I among others, am curious as to why Government/s (present and former) have not pursued this route before, i.e. offered "X" amount of dollars to the property owner/s to possess their empty house/s and put them back on the market to ease the shortage (to some degree anyway). And if the property can't be bought outright, then work on an alternative; like maybe fix up the property, having an agreement made to share a percentage of the income from either rents or sale, with them who outright own the premises (and Housing) Solution? Possibly.

JUST CURIOUS

What was I to do?

July 25, 2008

Dear Sir,

This morning, as I do everyday, I pulled my car into the kerb on Reid Street to let my wife out at her place of work. She reached over to give me a kiss goodbye, collected her items, got out and then opened the back door to kiss our daughter good bye. The whole process takes about 20 to 30 seconds. Not much traffic comes down on Reid Street, my car was idling at the time and there were plenty of other parking spaces.

Suddenly a traffic warden took it upon herself to walk up and tell us to move along and that we couldn't park here before 10 a.m. Anyone with half a brain could see that we weren't parking. Now while you aren't allowed to park on Reid Street in a private car before 10 a.m., is it against the law to drop someone off on this street at 8.30 a.m.; or should I just push my wife out of the car at 20 mph, blowing her kisses in the rear view mirror next time?

What has this Island come to where one of the simple joys in life, kissing your family good-bye, is overlooked by someone telling you to hurry up and move? To the traffic cop, thanks for ruining one of life's simple pleasures today, in a move that was completely without judgment, without taste and without compassion. Have a lovely day now…
