The Pembroke Community gathered on Victor Scott field yesterday to celebrate Good Friday.Around 90 people attended the open air family service, which was held on the school field where last year 35-year-old father Kimandae Walker was fatally shot while flying kites with his children.Several uniformed officers stood in the crowd watching over the proceedings, while the Bermuda Police Service's moble command centre remained parked in the school parking lot.One attendant said: “It's good to see the police out, but I really don't think anything is going to happen today. Not here, at least.“Let's just hope we can enjoy this holiday without bloodshed.”One Community Unified, a group of churches, community leaders and members of the public, organised the event to help bring the Pembroke community together.Rev Nick Dill, leading the service, told the audience: “On this day last year this was the site of a dark event. We live in a dark world, there is no doubt about it.“But it is on this day that we remember that Jesus died for all of our sins, from the gang leaders to the bereaving family member.”Along with music and prayer, the ceremony featured reenactments of the crucifixion and the events leading to it, with Government Minister Michael Weeks and United Bermuda Party MP John Barritt both stepping up to take part.Following a prayer and blessing by Pastor Dwayne Simons, the audience were given codfish cakes and drinks. After the service, Rev Dill said: “It would have been great if we had more people, but looking around we have people from all across the area, which is good.“I think the message got across that no matter what happens, there is hope for redemption.”He also said that the organisation would be hosting a family fun day on Victor Scott field today between 1.30pm and 5pm, and invited the community to attend.Useful website: www.community.parishofpembroke.com.
