POWERBOATING RAB A new rule designed to draw spectators goes into affect for this weekend's start of the Bermuda PowerBoat Association season.
For the first time, drivers face a three-race minimum in order to qualify for the Round the Island Race in August, translating into a mandatory 50 percent attendance rate for the first six races of the campaign.
And it's paid off already with nine boats -- and the potential of several more signing up by tonight's registration deadline -- having been confirmed for the National Spring Championship on Sunday.
Four classes of boats will have their engines primed and ready to go at Ferry Reach for the offshore race, starting at 1.00 p.m. The closed circuit race -- including personal watercraft racing -- begins at 2.30 at the same time.
Among those entered are BPA commodore Paul Rodrigues, who joins Jesse Furtado at the wheel of their D-class speedster, Geronimo . They'll be challenged by Shawn White and Michael Mello's Batboat in the popular class.
Others to watch include Warren Roe and Richard Correira aboard Progression and, in the B class, rival brothers Howard Paynter and Keith Paynter.
Next race day is May 31.
