Donawa leads home bumper 5K field
Las Vegas Marathon -- to record a comfortable victory in yesterday's Butterfield and Vallis 5K.
Donawa hit the tape in a fast 15 minutes and 38 seconds, over 100 yards ahead of his closest rival, John Wassemaar (15.57). Teenager Tyler Butterfield, on the comeback trail following last year's forced lay-off through illness, came home third in 16.15.
Anna Eatherley, meanwhile, continued her dominance of the women's division, placing ninth overall in 18.11. Second placed Lynn Patchett was almost a minute behind in 19.10 while Alexandra Reck placed third in 20.02.
With yesterday's event combining the second races of the KPMG junior series, a huge field of more than 400 runners -- the majority in the 12 and under age group -- turned out for three separate races.
Mark Morrison triumphed among the 13-18 year-olds but was pushed all the way by rival Henry Talbot. At the finish they were separated by just two seconds, Morrison clocking 17.09 and Talbot 17.11. Chris Conway placed third in 18.45.
Chloe Kempe was the first girl in that division in 21.04 followed by Tiffany Eatherley (21.12) and Robyn Dickinson (22.19).
Among the 12 and under group, who ran approximately 2.5 kilometres, Coyotito Smith led a field of over 200 in a time of 8.59. Taiyaun Talbot was second in 9.10 and Chayce Smith third in 9.12. Flora Duffy, sixth overall, was the first girl in 9.26, with Shellicia McKenzie second in 10.21 and Latroya Darrell third in 10.36.
Bermuda International Marathon women's record holder, Yelena Plastinina, was victorious again on Saturday when she won the Apeldoorn Marathon in Holland in a time of 2:44.27.
And the winner is...: Jay Donawa crosses the finish line, well clear of his nearest rival John Wassemaar, to win yesterday's Butterfield and Vallis 5K.
