Local teams land Goodwill titles
when Ocean View and St. George's landed the net and gross titles.
Ocean View, led by top local pro Dwayne Pearman and also including Dave Purcell, Andre Dill and Leon Williams, came from three strokes behind net leaders Schuyler Meadows to win that division by two strokes ahead of overnight leaders Schuyler Meadows and St. Louis Country Club. Ocean View finished on 239 and Schuyler Meadows and St. Louis both on 241.
Pearman's team also had the best overall gross score after their 62 gave them 258 overall. However, tournament rules forbid one team from winning both titles, so that one went to St. George's who finished five strokes back on 263 after their final round 66 at Mid Ocean.
Ocean View carded a 57 at Belmont yesterday while Schuyler Meadows and St.
Louis finished up at the tougher Castle Harbour where they shot 62 and 60 respectively.
"It was a good course to finish on,'' said Pearman at Belmont afterwards. He put the success down to a team effort as Purcell (four handicapper), Dill (six) and Williams (17) all played steady. Pearman led from the front, carding a hole-in-one on the 17th to keep the momentum going.
"That's the one (hole) that was giving me trouble at the Belmont (Invitational),'' Pearman pointed out. He used a six iron to sink the ace.
"We figured if we could shoot a 64 gross and 58 net that we stood a good chance,'' said Pearman.
Scottish team Loch Lomond Golf Club finished fourth overall on 243 following their 59 at Port Royal which was the best net score there yesterday.
Atlanta National, the early leaders had to settle for fifth overall in the net following their final round of 63 at Port Royal which gave them a four-round total of 244.
The overall gross winning St. George's team comprised pro Kim Swan and amateurs Maxwell Curtis, Zane DeSilva and Douglas (Blip) Morris.
