Achance to hit the heights with jazz supremo Joey
Bermudians will have an opportunity to hear renowned jazz organist, composer and recording artist Joey DeFrancesco when he performs in concert at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts on Sunday, June 8 under the auspices of Treble Clef Productions. At the age of 17 he emerged as a jazz prodigy, and single-handedly resurrected the Hammond B-3 organ as a viable jazz medium. He has been voted the world's premier jazz organist in major polls, and voted second only to the legendary Jimmy Smith by Downbeat Magazine.
Billed as "taking jazz playing to new heights", the 31-year-old artist has been performing professionally for over 12 years, and has toured with such legends as Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith, Elvin Jones, Jack McDuff and Pat Martino, among many others. From his late teens he has also led one of the most successful organ trios in the history of jazz. He has also released 15 CDs, on which he combines vocalising in a relaxed, jazz-wise style with bopping organ accompaniment.
Mr. DeFrancesco's Bermuda gig will include his band, and they will introduce his newest CD, `Singin' and Swingin'. Sharing the programme will be the Bermuda Jazz Ensemble and James Richardson. The master of ceremonies will be DJ Derek (CJ) Symonds.
Tickets ($65) can be purchased at the Music Box, People's Pharmacy, and 27th Century Boutique, or ( the Jazz Hotline at 291-JAZZ (291-5299).
